The route connecting London Euston and Glasgow Central covers a distance of approx 400 miles and under the auspices of initially the LMS and subsequently British Railways, provided a continuous rail link between the two cities. Although operated by those two concerns as a single entity, the development of the route embraced a wide range of individual railway companies, which through a series of mergers and take overs eventually became known as the West Coast Main Line. The complexity of the development is well illustrated in the 141-mile section from Crewe to Carlisle which numbered no less than eight constituent companies. The companies were Lancaster & Carlisle, Lancaster & Preston Junction, North Union, Wigan Branch, Liverpool & Manchester, Warrington & Newton, Grand Junction, London & North Western. This book is a pictorial record covering the last 10 years of British Railways steam (1958-1968) and early main line diesel workings of one such section - the Wigan Springs Branch to Preston of the former North Union Railway (NU) which formed a vital link in the overall scheme. Card-covers, usual series format, 128 pages thick, fully illustrated with black and white photos, track layout/plans etc. Very good to good condition - light cover wear.
