Pricing & History
Fr-2173-B. 1990, $100 Federal Reserve Note. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. Star Note. Defective notes printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing before June 1910 were replaced with hand-stamped notes with the same serial number as the imperfect note. As the production of notes increased this became impractical. Star notes with different serial numbers were the answer. The system continues today, with the use of a solid star (*), which is applied to small-size notes. Federal Reserve notes such as the $100 denomination employ the star as the suffix; in the early days it was a prefix to the serial number.
