Another set of wonderful Grand Tour Intaglios from the recent upscale estate sale in Scottsdale. The first one is actually in French. Thank goodness, as I can read that! It shows the famous scene of Louis XV1 and Marie Antoinette being brought back to Paris, after having tried to flee the country. It is entitled "Arrival of the King in Paris". The other three medallions are all in Latin. I now realise that I should have paid more attention in Latin class! The one under the Louis one is seemingly of a Duke by the name of Brunius Reip. I am not sure if it is saying something about his generosity, as the translation seems to be something about abundant supply! I will give the quote for those Latin scholars out t "Brunius Reip Gall A Consuliis Supr Ital Copiar Dux". On the bottom it says "Anno 1X". Year nine. The third one down, I have managed to translate. "Doesn't Worry About the Numbers". It shows a lion killing sheep. Seemingly it was a quote to warn farmers not to count their sheep too carefully, as numbers could quickly change, due to predators such as lions or wolves. The last one appears to show a strong man, but he looks to be pinned under a rock, or some such thing.
