Bound in a Most Handsome brown Moroccan cowhide, the book has matching French moire silk end leaves, satin book marker, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for minor imperfection to gilt. Jack London, who lived from 1876-1916, was born in San Francisco as the illegitimate son of William Chaney, a roving astrologer, and Flore Williams, a spiritualist. When he was eight months old, his mother married John London, a kind, decent, poor farmer. He adopted the boy. Jack grew up on the Oakland waterfront, read voluminously, dropped out of school at age 14---though he spent a semester at the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA--BERKELEY. London married in 1900, divorced three years later, married again, and with his second wife, he sailed to Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, the Fijis and Australia.
