Just out of a local estate is this attributed Frederick Rhead Arequipa Pottery vase. Early California Arts & Crafts pottery in a charcoal matte green glaze. Large and heavy size measuring 12 inches in height and weighing 4 and 1/2 pounds! Gorgeous floral relief design with reticulated areas in the branches. In excellent condition with no cracks. There is some rough areas with clay separation along small areas of the bottom rim. Vase is structurally sound. Vase is unmarked, but appears in the beautifully illustrated, 1986 Sharon Dale book, "Frederick Hurten Rhead, An English Potter In America". This book will be included with the vase in this auction. Arequipa Pottery was started by Frederick Rhead in Fairfax, California in 1911. It was a sanitarium for woman patients recovering from tuberculosis. Making pottery was suppose to be therapy for the woman. Rhead left soon after he arrived and Arequipa remained active only until 1915. Please e-mail us with any questions to avoid any confusion.
