The offering is a unique and very interesting letter sent by "Thos Green" from Richmond , VA on March 14, 1840 to "Mr Duff Green", a prominent and successful merchant and businessman in Falmouth , VA. The letter measures 7 7/8" by 10" and has writing on one side. The reverse side contains a penned "filing note", "14 March 1840 Thomas Green Letter." The letter reads in part, "Mr Ro. E. Lee has agreed in writing to take the [appears to read] "Bowen Survey" at $20 payable in stocks at $55 without condition. He informed me "it would not be so good a bargain to him, as when he first proposed it, as he had sold since then, his stocks to you. Then excluding the idea that he even expected to get that back again. I do not very well see w he is to get stocks to pay for the land - if he gets Kettlewells ok, he will still have to get $1500 or $2000 worth to pay for the land - Another purchase payable in stocks might cover the purchases. I think stocks must rise if this arrangement is made and hence my favoring it - . . . objections are strong I admit - but with these people in the Board, we should never get the means of paying . . . debts.
