Up for auction is an impressive 1845 model French Infantry Officers sword. Given the level of decoration on the blade, this sword would have most likely belonged to a lieutenant or equivalent level officer. This sword along with a few others I have were purchased from the estate of a Civil War collector in Columbus Georgia in 1971, and while t is no evidence that this sword was used in that war, this type of sword was purchased by both sides of the conflict in the early years of the war due to lack of edged weapons. This model, and the next level 1845 model with a more elaborate guard were the ones that the 1850 foot officers sword was based on. This sword has a 6 inch handle and guard and a 33 inch long blade and is of the quill back design with a rounded spine and the tip reinforcement. The forte of the blade is covered on both sides for half of its length with etchings which would have at the time been gilded. Due to age however and use the guilding is no longer present, but the etchings consist of the typical floral, flags and cannon designs popular at the time as well as the tyypical shield cartouche at the base of the forte which was seen in French swords of this era.
