French Louis XVI Gilt Bronze and Brass Antique Sculptural Inkwell "Le Penseur" After the Original by Sculptor Émile PicaultFrance, c. 1900Item # 120012TQP07 This French Louis XVI Gilt Bronze and Brass Sculptured Antique Inkwell is crafted during the first quarter of the 20th Century, a period when taste for works of the Rococo and Neoclassical influence were highly sought after and were revived. A vast span exists in this period, where quality can range from very poor to literally being on par with the works of sculptors and ébénistes of the late 18th Century. The casts of this work exist somewhere towards the upper 3/4 of this range, being finely detailed and chased, but without the exacting precision of an original work. Resting on a large carved and molded solid marble base, channeled for pens to rest, the sculpture projects dynamically from the center, rising to a full 14 1/2". We believe it is crafted of brass, the inkwells flanking it of gilt bronze.Titled "Le Penseur", literally translating as "The Thinker" in French, the figure is captivated with a pensive expression of one faced with a difficult decision. His form and heroic appeal suggests an attempt to balance the intellect and poetic, reviving the tradition of Michelangelo.
