Sumptuous, Elegant Lyon Silk, 19th century damask style shawl LYON SHAWL OF 19TH CENTURY, A RARE DE-ACCESSION FROM MET MUSEUM, EXCELLENT CONDITION Lyon was the center of silk production in the 19th century in Europe. This beautiful deep pink/purple and black shawl is an excellent example of this production. It is warp faced on the purple ground side. The purple is composed of a tight weave of black and deep pink. It is reversible with the reverse having black flowers on a bright purple ground, but it is better on the side shown. It has a lovely and complex pattern of swags and flowers, chrysanthamum and bluebell, throughout, nicely spaced to show off the gorgeous ground color of deep purple. I would date it around 1850 due to the design and color. Finally, it has lovely silk fringe in swag design alternating pink and black at the ends in great condition. It measures 32 x 32 inches without fringe. It's a really nice damask pattern. The condition is Exellent. And this is from one of the truly great textile collections in the world, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY. The silk is very soft, feather weight, typical of Lyon. The colors are unfaded and just lovely. This would make a great item for a collector or gift for someone who loves gorgeous silk. International bidders, except India, are welcome.
