This is the very rare folio size Volume 1 firstedition of a beautiful volume of French painting titled 'The Masterpieces of French Art – being a biographical history of art in France from the earliest period to and including the Salon of 1882.' by Louis Viardot published by Gebbie and Co. Philadelphia in 1883. The book with leather spine and corners measures approx. 12” by 15” (It weighs in at over 8 pounds) and contains beautiful frameable photogravures (see photos) on special paper in the first section and a second section of wood prints after paintings with write-ups on the paintings. The condition of the book overall is good. There is wear on the spine and corners. (see photo) There are 3 separated pages in the front including the marble end paper (which has missing corners) and there are 41 of the 50 photogravures present and 48 of the 52 wood engravings in the second section. This was bought from an estate sale and some of the missing pieces were for sale in old frames that had long hung in the estate. There is little foxing on the photogravures and it is contained primarily in the margins. (Please look at the photos.) The quality of these photogravures is outstanding as you can see by the photos.
