This is a real 1842 French Naval Boarding Cutlass. The text on the blade translates to "Royal Manufacturer, Chatellerault, Jan. 1842". Chatellerault is a city in France that is known for its sword making industry from medieval times. It has a sweeping upturned blade, and a single wide fuller for balance. The distinctive closed cup hilt, of iron, is coated in the original heavy black japanning to protect from rust, and has the correct makers mark. An anchor is engraved on both sides of the blade to illustrate the naval provenance. This,175 year old cutlass, or "Le Sabre d' Abordage", was a very effective fighting weapon. When you hold this sword, the balance and power is Incredible!
