This is a relic made from original material taken from the U.S. Constitution frigate ("Old Ironsides") while it was undergoing restoration from 1927 to 1930. It can be used as a decorative piece or a bookend or doorstop. It is made in the form of a ship's wheel, from copper taken from parts of the original Constitution. The centerpiece of the wheel reads "Old Ironsides" and "U.S. Frigate Constitution"/ "Launched 1797 / 1804 Tripoli / 1812 Guerriere Java / 1815 Cyane Levant". The references to Guerriere, Java, Cyane, and Levant in the centerpiece are to British warships which the Constitution defeated in battle. Along the front of the base it reads "This Material Was Taken From U.S. Frigate Constitution 1927".The piece measures approx. 6-1/2" tall, and 5-7/8" x 1-1/4" at the base. It weighs just over 2 lbs., 5 oz. The base has been filled with metal to make it sturdy and a tab has been added at the bottom to help it support books when used as a bookend. The difference in toning on the middle of the centerpiece is from the way it has been stored. The U.S. Constitution is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy, named by President George Washington after the Constitution of the United States of America.
