This is a truly old, beautiful and stunning fully beaded child's or youth Native American vest. C. 1890. The bead colors are all 19th century and the design is older as far as vests go. Around the back is the traditional bar design. The back and front are intricate triangle designs with crosses with small spiders going off the design. On the back , which is really neat, the words "KOLAYAPI" are beaded which is most likely Lakota, Sioux. I have found the word in Lakota to mean " friend or those who extend friendship". I love the edging around the the arm holes and the front. The beads are just fantastic - old metal beads, blues, older white core rose or whitehearts, greasy green, greasy yellow and white. The vest measures 13 long by 12in as it is displayed. It is 25 in. all the way around. It is fully lined with an old calico cloth. The vest is constructed from hide and beads attached with sinew. T is a small area on the left bottom corner that has the beads attached with thread ( note photo) which could be an old repair. It is to me a great piece of Native American beadwork and very collectable as a kid or child item. Please e-mail with any questions. Guaranteed old. Take a look at my other Indian beaded items listed this week. T is no reserve so don't miss out.
