This is a brand-new USA made 2 Gallon Stoneware Pickling/Storage Crock produced by Burley Clay Products in Roseville, OH, the ORIGINAL ONE AND ONLY USA manufacturer who, since the 1920's, still produces the old-school way with the clay mined directly out of the hills surrounding the plant. Small imperfections in the glaze, minute lumps, bumps, and pock marks are common to ware made this way. The Bluebird insignia, exclusive ONLY to this original company, pays homage to the fact that in early production times, the process of making pottery would start in the Spring when the Bluebirds were seen for the first time. The 2 gallon is our most popular size, not too big, not too small. It's just like Grandma had, and now tested free of lead, cadmium, and any other impurities. It's ready to go for your pickles, cabbage, meats, and whatever else you want to store in it! We are asked regularly if they come with lids and/or some sort of weights. That is an added expense, and there is no need for those when using these crocks. The practical and proven way is to use a plastic bag, filled with water, to create an airtight seal on top of fermenting veggies. This allows fermentation gases to escape on their own.
