This is a 4 oz. bottle of Pureoleen Tung oil. This oil is the raw oil made without and petroleum distillates other oils or synthetics that are found in other Tung oils or Tung formulas. This is the oil that was used by the original Springfield armory in Springfield Massachusetts. Tung oil replaced the raw linseed oil starting in late 1941 for the M1 Garand stock. Tung oil (also known as china oil) was thought to be superior to linseed oil because it did not smoke as easily when the the Garand barrel became hot. This oil was in use on the M1 Garand until the last regular issue rifle was produced at the armory in May 1957. International Harvester and H&R ended their production of the M1 Garand in 1956. Tung oil was also specified for the government successor to the to the M1 Garand.The model rifle shown here is from the early Korea Garand's, made at Springfield Armory in Sept of 1953. The stock is a recently made reproduction of a Garand stock. It is made from American Black Walnut ( native to the US). the same wood that was fitted to all Garand's produced during WWII and most post war rifles. This stock was finished with only Pureoleen Tung oil about 8 years ago. No stain was added. You can see that Tung does not have as much gloss as Linseed oil. Tung oil does not continue to darken with age like Linseed oil. With original period
