This photograph, like many others, comes from an Argentinean Newspaper collection I bought some years ago. THE STORY OF DR. WASSELL : Gary Cooper - Dr. Corydon M. Wassell Laraine Day - Madeline Signe Hasso - Bettina Dennis O'Keefe - Hopkins (Hoppy) Carol Thurston - Tremartini The genesis of The Story of Dr. Wassell is said to have been a story told by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to director Cecil B. DeMille. One suspects that FDR didn't take the 138 minutes it required DeMille to repeat the tale on film. Gary Cooper stars as Corydon M. Wassell, a real-life country doctor from Arkansas who worked as a medical missionary in China in the years prior to WW II. When America enters the war, Dr. Wassell joins the Navy and is shipped to Japan. After the battle of Macassar, Wassell is placed in charge of the wounded evacuated marines.
