GASOLINE ALLEY BY FRANK KING SEPTEMBER 3, 1942 WORLD WAR TWO COMIC STRIP SKEEZIK GASOLINE ALLEY is one of the great achievements in comic strips. It is the second longest running strip in history, behind only the KATZENJAMMER KIDS. Creator Frank King wrote and drew the strip from its inception in 1918 to 1959. Auctioneer Russ Cochran recently did comicdom another of his many great services by introducing to the market approximately two thousand originals from the King family collection. This strip, dated September 3, 1942, is titled “Passing the Buck private”. Lead character Skeezik, doing his World War II Army service, is shown on guard duty, remaining formal even when confronted by his friend Buzzard, and even when Buzzard owes him four dollars! This strip not only has Skeezik in all three panels, it demonstrates King’s mastery of blacks, which was only infrequently displayed. There is the soiling one might associate with an original of this age, but there are no tears.
