United States Army general Matthew Ridgway [born March 3, 1895 - died March 1993] he graduated from West Point in 1917, and served in Nicaragua, China and the Philippines. In 1942, he was promoted to brigadier general and given command of the 82nd Infantry Division, one of the Army's two parachute divisions. In 1943, he helped plan the airborne operation of Sicily and later was responsible for planning the airborne operations during the D-Day invasions. In 1944, he commanded the 18th Airborne Corps and led the invasion of the Rhineland joining up with the Russian Army before the final push into Germany. During the Korean War he commanded the 8th Army and was promoted to full general. Upon his return to the U.S, he served as chief of Staff of the United States Army. Listed for auction is the autograph of United States general Matthew Ridgeway signed on a vintage First Day Issue commemorative postal cover which commemorates general John J. Pershing. The cover contains an attractive ink cachet and postmarked Nov 17, 1961, and affixed with three vintage U.S eight cent postage stamps which honor the general. The cover is signed ''M B Ridgeway general, U.S Army, Ret'' in blue felt pen. The cover measures 3.50 x 6.00 inches and is affixed [removable] to a larger page which has a newspaper article about the general's passing on the verso. read more
