This superb solid silver snooker or billiards plaque measures 157mm (6'') x 120mm (5'') and weighs 158 grams or just over 5 troy ounces. Although unmarked it does test as sterling silver and dates from the early 1800's. The scene depicted is of two billiard players with the player much larger in size than the seated opponent and behind the table there is another man holding a rest, this piece of silver is attached to the background via pins which secure it on the reverse creating an almost 3D effect. The background is engraved as the inside of a theatre with the curtains above with the lights hanging down and rows of Georgian gentleman spectators with pictures on the wall behind. There are 3 balls on the table so I assume this is billiards and the setting of a theatre may well mean that it was produced to celebrate a famous early match or even as a trophy for the winner. I have tried a limited amount of research and cannot find anything similar and I am sure a sports historian will recognise its significance. An important piece of snooker billiard memorabilia sold in good honest antique condition sold with no reserve. International buyers are always welcome to this NO RESERVE auction. F.M.O.C.
