In the early 1900s, Cigar Bands were a readily available and cheap material for use in folk art . Using collage and decoupage, artists decorated mostly glass and china items, as well as tobacco humidors, small wooden boxes, and even furniture. Hobby kits, sold in the early 1900s, typically included an undecorated plate, bowl or ashtray, along with instructions on how to apply the cigar bands, which were glued on and then coated with shellac. Kits included images of British royalty, famous authors, US presidents, and many more such as this RARE example from Germany! This particular tray is decorated with a great varity of cigar bands! In deep, rich tones of red, gold, and black; with vintage green handmade felt on the backside. The work was completed with painstaking care and attention to detail, especially such a large example! Could have been a kit or self project? I like this one very much and have sold several on eBay throughout my time most have been very small but this coffee table sized one is very classic decor! I hope I've not over-looked who this couple may have been,, but I think it is a family piece considering the ashtray came from an estate sale? Amazing piece of folk art was probably made in Germany as as far as I can tell all are German bands, in the early 1900s. It is in wonderful condition! Measures; 6" X 6" read more
