This German M1898 Short Quillback Dress Bayonet is only in fair conditionIt appears to be an engraved long quillback bayonet that has been shortened by removing a middle section of blade and rejoining the rear portion and the front quillback section. The workmanship and welding of this revision was of good quality and the result is a unique looking dress bayonet.The bayonet was originally plated but most of the plating on the crossguard and pommel is gone or flaking off. No bad corrosion of any kind.The blade is polished and in good (shortened) condition. The rear portion of the 10 3/4 inch blade is engraved and plated. The engraving includes crossed cannons, a wheeled caisson of some type and branch or floral reliefs. The front section with the quillback is polished steel in the white.The wood grips are in good condition with only a few marks from use and slight dark staining on one grip.T are no manufacturers marks on the blade. T are two marks aft of the press stud on the left side of the but they do not appear to be military markings as far as I can determine. Best guess is a commercial proof mark of some type.This bayonet is sold with the understanding it is not in original condition but is an oddball for those that like this type of bayonet It is not a pristine example but is very presentable.
