Vintage / Antique Porcelain Ceramic Whale Ashtray Ashtray stands 3" from table to the top of his open mouth. He is about 5" from the tip of his tale to his mouth. This unusual piece is made of heavy, white porcelain. He is painted a dark green with painted detail in gold. His open mouth is divided by a wall of "baleen", forming two compartments. There is a well in his rear section with a large indented holder for cigarettes or cigars. He stands on a pedestal set in a brass/bronze stylized frame. The frame is stamped, "Germany." There is no maker's mark on the ashtray, but there is an embossed number "178" on the bottom. Very light so I was unable to photograph successfully. The age is unknown but I am guessing it to be circa 1910 or so just because of the style. He is in pretty good shape. No major cracks, crazing or gold loss. The only defect is a rough patch on the bottom of the mouth. It almost looks like someone used this to store something that damaged the surface of the mouth edge. Does not detract from this piece at all. The most noticeable aspect is that there is no gold on that portion. Please see photo 4 for details.
