OAK LEAVES AND SWORDS TO THE KNIGHTS CROSS (EICHENLAUB MIT SCHWERTEN ZUM RITTERKREUZ) The Knights cross was instituted in 1939 as a new award positioned above the 1st Class Iron Cross. Subsequently in 1940 the Oak leaves to the Knights Cross were established. It soon became clear that there was a need for a yet another even more senior award to recognise those existing Knights Cross with Oak leaves holders who further distinguished themselves. For this reason in June 1941 Hitler introduced the Oak leaves and Swords to the Knights Cross which the recipient simply wore in place of the regular suspension loop. Worn round the neck on a ribbon as a suspension for the Knights Cross. As with the Knights Cross, authority to confer the Oak leaves and Swords to the Knights Cross was vested in Adolf Hitler alone and he personally scrutinised all recommendations for the award. Only about 159 oak leaf clusters to the Knights Cross were bestowed during WWII and these only for outstanding achievements, acts of bravery or leadership. These superb oak leaves are die struck from 800 silver and bear the hallmark of C. E. Jucker of Berlin, one of the Third Reich’s most renown manufacturers of awards and decorations.
