Very Nice World War II German General Assault Badge for 75 Engagements. Please email: with any questions and/or requests for photographs. General Assault Badge: Oval alloy badge consisting of oak wreath with hunched Wehrmacht eagle and the usual marking, and with crossed bayonet and stick-grenade beneath. Originally issued to assault engineer units on June 1, 1940. Later, on June 22, 1940, two more types of the same badge were introduced, with number of assaults added on a tablet at the base of the badge. During the early part of the war, these assault badges were manufactured in a heavy brass or alloy. However, as the war progressed and the need for metals became a matter of some importance, these awards became somewhat thinner and lighter - so much so that, by 1945, they resembled pieces of stamped sardine cans. Indeed t is an example known as the Lorient shield which was manufactured at the local fish cannery in 1944. (From: Collector's Guide to Militaria by Derek E.
