THIS AUCTION IS FOR: GILBERT HAVEN SMITH (1882-1959) VERMONT LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRST PAINTINGS I BOUGHT WHEN I STARTED THIS BUSINESS. I LIKED IT SO MUCH I HUNG IT IN MY OFFICE AND T IT HAS HUNG UNTIL NOW. THIS IS REALLY A EXCELLENT PAINTING BY WELL LISTED VERMONT ARTIST. FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE ARTIST HIS BIO FROM ASKART READS: Gilbert Haven Smith was born in 1882 and died in 1959. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was a contemporary of noted Pennsylvania landscape impressionist Daniel Garber. His primary career path led him to the ministry of the New Church (officially know as the General Church of the New Jerusalem), with Glenview, Illinois as his final pastorate in the 1940s. During his working life he painted a number of landscapes, also beach scenes at Lake Michigan. T is a family ancedote, that as a minister, Gilbert Haven Smith often gave one of his paintings as a wedding gift to couples whose ceremonies he officiated. On his retirement, he and his wife moved to Vermont, living in Dorset, Bennington and Shaftsbury, w he painted numerous landscapes and local covered bridges. The Bennington Museum has at least four of his covered bridge paintings in their collection.
