This rare Glenmorangie malt scotch whisky has been matured for fifteen years in casks of American white oak, from the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, which have previously been used in the making of bourbon. The casks lie undisturbed in Glenmorangie's traditional stone-biult and earth-floored warehouses on Dornoch Firth w they are permeated by fresh sea air; the gentle local climate ensuring a steady path to maturity. The ‘seasoning' of these casks with bourbon removes the harsher more astringent oak characteristics, giving a mellowness to the ‘sleeping' spirit and allowing the more delicate flavours amd aromas present in the whisky to develop over this long period of maturation. At Glenmorangie however, we have found that transferring the mature whisky to air-dried, freshly charred ‘new oak' for a short period of ‘finishing' adds other unique flavours and an intriguing spiciness. The result of this care and patience is a single malt whisky of rare Tasting Notes Rich and smooth with a distinctive spicy character. The oak notes leap out with vanilla, walnuts and roasted coffee. Balanced between the dryness of oak, nuts and spices and the sweetness of vanilla, honey and chocolate. With water the taste is initially sweet with caramel and citrus notes, then gently oaky with cloves and cinnamon spices emerging. The flavour rolls further on the tongue to give a slight smokiness, coffee and the oily dryness of walnuts. The mouthful is exceptionally warming and spicy with a sumptous velvety texture.
