1914-15 Trio to 13383 L/Cpl. John Arthur Tomlins, Born Gloucester, Enlisted Gloucester. KIA F&F 9th.May 1915.2nd Glosters were in the 81st Brigade of the 27th Division Commanding Officer Lt. Col. G.S Tulloh.The 81st. & 82nd Brigades were in position south of the Menin Road, the Glosters trenches were along the Eastern edge of Sanctuary Wood.The enemy opened the attack with a heavy bombardment which went on with hardly a break for most of the day.Infantry attack were preceeded by furious rifle fire & bombing.The enemy got into the front line & cut of some men, but the remainder were able to retire to the main line in the rear.Help came from the reserve company & two companies of the Leinster Regiment.In the early hours of the following morning the 2/Glosters were relieved by the 1/Royal Scots.The Glosters casualties during the attack totalled 5 Officers & 140 men killed, wounded & missing, L/Cpl tomlins being one of the KIA.
