The Legendery Targa Florio event, held in Mid-May and run on the Torturous mountain roads of sicily, demanded incredible agility, strength, and durability from the machines that dared to compete. Small and light was often the formula for success, as many heavier, more powerful cars were pounded into submission or met with untimely ends against the unforgiving stone walls, buildings, rocks, and mile marker posts that lined the course. Ferrari's world championship contenders, the powerful 412P and 330 P4 were not ideally suited for this grueling race, but since much of the road surface had been resurfaced following the previous year's event, it was decided to enter one factory 330 P4 Spyder for local ace and Palermo race school master Nino Vaccarella partnered with Lodovico Scarfiotti in chassis #0846. Vaccarella, living up to his local hero status, eclipsed the previous lap record in practice, by two minutes, demoralizing the field! In a rare instance on the second grueling near 45-mile lap, Vaccarella misjudged his speed in the fast but unweildy 330 P4 heading into a tight hairpin turn entering the village of Collesand and plowed into a stone wall ending the hopes for a win.
