Golden Spike âe" Promontory Point Centennial ~ 1869 - 1969 This is the Large bronze alloy medallion authorized by Congress and struck by the Philadelphia Mint in commemoration of the 100 th anniversary of completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. (Bears the Philadelphia Mint âeoePâe stamp.) The obverse side of the medallion depicts the engines Jupiter and No. 119 coming together against a mountain background. The inscription reads: âeoeThe Pacific Railway is Completed. May 10, 1869. The Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads Linking the Nation, Promontory Summit, Utah.âe The reverse side of the medallion depicts the golden spike set against a rail bearing the dates âeoe1869âe and âeoe1969âe and âeoeSacramento,âe âeoePromontoryâe and âeoeOmaha.âe The text around the circumference is: âeoeGolden Spike Centennial Celebration Commission âe" The Oceans United By Railwayâe The dark areas are artifacts of the photography, as are the apparent nicks in the edge of one photo, i.e., false color. The medallion has been carefully stored and is in mint condition with no discoloration or defects.
