George III Mahogany and Chequer Inlay Tea Caddy This is a most attractive piece with the typical simplicity of shape enhanced by the use of a chequer inlay, possibly of boxwood and ebony, that runs along each edge, including the base. The careful choice of veneer, selected by the craftsman, provides a contrast in colours intended to attract the eye. Measuring approximately 11½" x 6" x 6" makes this a good size for a tea caddy. Apart from those minor knocks and stains that might have been expected to accrue, it has survived for almost one hundred and fifty years in remarkably good condition, which is a tribute to the work of the craftsman. The only significant damage is bruising to the lid caused by the handle. The dark mahogany has a very nice grain and, over the years, has also acquired a very good patina. All the chequer inlay looks to be intact, showing the care taken when it was made. It has a teardrop shaped bone escutcheon. Opening the lid you will notice that, what look to be the original hinges, are designed to prevent the lid from falling fully back. A mark of the care taken in construction. The lock also looks to be original but, sadly, t is no key with which to test the working of the mechanism. The underside of the lid looks to be lined with its original green velvet. However, your attention will be drawn to the covers for the compartments which, matching the exterior, are veneered with mahogany and edged with the same chequer inlay. Each cover has a small turned wooden knob to enable ease of lifting, but the supports for the lids look to be replacements. The mixing bowl is probably also a replacement although fitting very snugly and sympathetic to the simplicity of the rest of the item. A very nice piece, made by a craftsman who knew what he was doing and typical of its age. Postage and packing will be $27 to UK and $69 to USA.
