Stunning 19thC Chinese Cloisonne Enamel Covered Bowl EXQUISITE ANTIQUE CHINESE CLOISONNE COVERED DISH China Qing Dynasty This is the most beautiful antique cloisonne dish & truly one of a kind. It was handmade in China in the second half of the 18th century & is covered in the finest enameling with just breathtaking colors. The background is a beautiful turquoise, adorned with gorgeous pink, green & yellow lotus blossoms to the lid & to all 4 sides of the body, surrounded by fine black scrolling. The shape is that of a casserole dish, a shape that is rarely seen, & it has an enameled finial, as well as 2 nicely patinated bronze or brass handles, with the interior of both the lid & the body lined in cerulean blue enamel. And it is signed, which is extremely rare, as I have never seen a signed piece of cloisonne, & this one is signed on the bottom in raised red-enameled characters on a black enamel background. Quite unusual. This lovely dish measures 10 inches long by 6 inches wide, & stands 43/4 inches tall. It is in excellent antique condition, as it is easily 150 years old, with some small enamel loss here & there, which is to be expected, & a 3/8 inch piece of metal missing from the inner lid, which is totally inconsequential & unseen, & a few dings to the outer rim. As stunning as this piece is, these are really not worth mentioning & this handmade covered dish is just an outstanding example of early Chinese enameling. All Asian antiques are highly collectable today, as they grow ever higher in price & ever more difficult to find. Recently, I watched the Leslie Hindeman auction, & EVERYTHING sold for hundreds of percentages higher than the estimate. A damaged 10" carved "ox bone" panel estimated at $400-600, sold for $34,000; a jade vase estimated at $8-12,000, went for $190,000. The 2 or 3 items that had silver, went for enormous amounts. The auctions at Schmidt's and Slawinski had similar results. Please visit their websites & view past auction prices for yourself. There are billions of people in China, & they now have the freedom to buy & millions of dollars to do so. Hopefully, some of these treasures will also remain here. I have sent many of my possessions to auction houses, but it is a long & tedious process, so I will also be offering many of them here to you. His son started a shipping company, based in both Jamaica & Galveston, Texas. While on a delivery to Central America, the ship was caught in a violent storm, and sadly, all aboard perished at sea, except for my grandmother & her sister, my great aunt. While accompanied by their guardian, & in subsequent years together, they spent every summer on the Continent, especially France, and in England. While there, they purchased a myriad of fine antiques & objets d'art. Her dining room chairs were donated to the Smithsonian! Some also originate from my mother's side of the family.
