"GORILLA APPEAL"By David J Lawrence Limited Edition Print David J Lawrence was born in Eastergate, Sussex in 1944. He attended Junior school at Niton and Sandown Grammar School, Isle of Wight, where his interest in art and natural history was encouraged and the foundation for his success was laid. In 1959 the family moved to Minehead, Somerset and David studied at the Somerset College of Art - Taunton. In 1965 he moved to Devon, painting was then a time consuming hobby and he loved walking the rivers and moors with camera and sketchbook gathering material. He exhibited with the Dartmoor artist's annual show and was voted the most poplular artist for four consecutive years. In 1979 he made the decision - to take the plunge and become a professional artist. In 1980, he changed from the media of acrylic paint to oils. The general public were really interested in investing into media - water-colours or oils. He became completely converted to the latter, as in his opinion the versatility, covering capacity and life in oils cannot be matched. David was one of the few artist members of the Fine Art Trade Guild. He has worked on TV documentary on Lundy Island with Terry Wogan and raised tens of thousands of pounds for various charities through his exhibitions, including RAF Benevolent Fund, Hospice Care, R.S.P.B. and Muscular Dystrophy. read more
