In 1967, the Grateful Dead released their debut self-titled album, Grateful Dead . Although Stanley Mousecreated the album cover, Rick Griffin created promotional flyers for the band. Griffin’s handbill included the saying, “In the land of the dark, the ship of the sun, is driven by the Grateful Dead”, which was supposed to originally be on album cover, but was changed by the band. Fresno promoter Rocky’s Mag, used Griffin’s handbill as a show flyer by adding the date and venue for the Dead’s show on May 12th at the Marigold. The handbill, measuring 8 1/2” x 11”, is on rough blue paper stock. This handbill is in excellent condition, with the slightest crease in the bottom right corner. It’s not only an early Dead piece, but an early Rick Griffin design created shortly after his arrival to San Francisco. For co llectors seeking truly vintage posters there is no other source that can match the breadth and authenticity of the collection at Wolfgang's Vault.
