This circa 1945 to 1960 original oil on canvas painting of a figure alongside a car wreck or junkyard automobile has a fabulous Thomas Hart Benton WPA Depression Era Mid Century Modern feel however we have a suspicion it may be European, particularly Italian. One of our friends looked at it and said they thought it was the ghost of Jackson Pollock at his Long Island car accident although the car we don't believe to be accurate but perhaps one of his friends or followers could have painted the work based on the media accounts at the time because the subject does bear a resemblance to Pollock. Our measurement of an 8" x 12.75" stretcher pretty closely corresponds with the European 20 x 32 cm size used by a number of major artists for small oils and the canvas has a slightly European look to it - slightly more golden and slightly more fine than American canvases and the stretchers also have in our opinion some European subtleties such as no outer edge bevel that you'd see on an ANCO or Fredrix model yet it is not as fine as those used by the Ecole de School of Paris that would typically have a central stretcher bar so we are leaning towards Italy. The nails anchoring the canvas (see detail image) are old and look as though they may have some hand work involved in their manufacture. Our focal artist has become Alberto Sughi whose
