Great Lakes Canada USA Shipping 19th Century - A US Custom House document certifying payment of "Tonnage Duty" for the Scow-Schooner John A. McDonald had been made for 1 year, dated April 30, 1867. The document measures approximately 8 inches by 10 inches. History: The Scow-Schooner John A. McDonald was built in Port Rowan in 1863, and was active on the Great Lakes, particularly on Lake Erie. She would take on a cargo, often lumber or "pail wood", then contract with the nearest tug boat to haul her to the offload destination. The John A. McDonald was driven ashore and destroyed during a storm at Long Point, Lake Erie in September 1871. Condition: Some edge nicks/wear but overall sound.
