GRETSCH G6122JR Country Classic II SPEC OK, if you are here you probably think you know what this is - but please check the specs below as Gretsch produced two limited editions of this model with subtle but important differences in scale length and electrics. We have done a lot of trawling before listing. This is the pre-Fender (FMIC) 1999 version* (there is a post-FMIC 2003 model also). Look on the net and it's still confusing, with sellers/owners/forums rarely matching the correct spec with the correct model. To the best of my eye and tape measure this IS the correct spec: Double cutaway / 24.75" Scale Length / Arched Laminated Maple Top / Laminated Maple Body, 14" Wide, 2" Deep x 16" Long / 3 Piece Maple Neck, Joined At the 18th Fret / 2 High Sensitive Filter-Tron Pickups / 3 Position Toggle Switch / Volume1, Volume2, TONE, Master Volume (the later version has a 3 way tone switch, this has a variable tone control) / 1-11/16 Nut Width / 12" Radius Ebonised Rosewood Fretboard** / Ebony-Based Adjusto-Matic Bridge / Bigsby B6G Vibrato Tailpiece / Gold-Plated Hardwear / 22 Frets / Gold-Plated Grover 102-18G Rotomatic Die-Cast Tuners / Finished in Walnut Stain Gloss Urethane / Deluxe fitted Hardshell Case Included * At time of listing an exact same 1999 spec model is currently on sale in a UK guitar shop for £1850, with the 2003 spec oddly listed underneath. ** There are conflicting spec sheets for this model, some say the '99 model fretboard is ebony, some say ebonized rosewood. I have had a very close look and suspect it is in fact ebonized rosewood, the same spec as used on the Setzer Hot Rod models. The sound is very warm and especially rich in bass which also suggests rosewood, but if rosewood it is very tight grained choice wood indeed with only the underlying colour variations suggesting it''s not ebony. Info This guitar was made July 1999, the 238th of this model that overall produced between 400 and 500 of these 6122JR guitars over the two periods of production (if the forums are to be believed). It's a love it or hate it thing with these JR models, but sound-wise there's nothing to hate. The 3/4 body size (like a Gibbo 356 or Johnny A) deliver a very tight responsive sound and the medium depth body ensures the Gretsch bottom end is still there without it becoming overwhelming and boomy. Yeah it'll do Chet and George Harrison, even jazz very (nicely), but with both Jack White and Joe Walsh using this model you will quickly realise it boldly goes where no Country Gentleman has gone before. I'll quote from an independent online review: 'When I'm recording, I'm like a cook in a spice-cabinet, to find the right sound. I've frequently pulled out this guitar over various and many newer or vintage G*****'s that I own. If you want gritty bite, it's here. If you want mellow, it's here. If you want just about anything that you could want in the way of a humbucker-style sound, it's here. Adjusting the pickup height, or the posts-height, even slightly, provides incredible sound-changes and a wealth of opportunities to basically tune your own sound on this guitar.'
