An excellent Grimwade's Bruce Bairnsfather cheese dish c1920, depicting three of his World War One 'Old Bill' cartoons with the captions "At present we are staying at a farm ", " Where did that one go to", " Well if you know of a better hole, go to it", and a picture border of helmets plum tins, buckets, flasks, etc. on both butter dish lid and base. Printed in sepia. In good condition; usual fine crazing, but with a small chip on the cheese dish base rim no restoration. A rare item to find in such good order. Marked on the inside of the dish 'A Souvenir of the Great War, Commenced Aug 4th 1914; Armistice 11th 1918; Peace Signed June 28th 1919. Bairnsfather Ware.
