Evans Probably Montgomery, Alabama: ca. 1990s, 356 pages, bound in plastic and paper covers. Plastic comb binding. Black author's experiences growing up in and around Bessemer Alabama's black neighborhoods from the late 1920s until he joined the American Armed forces in 1946. Lots of names & family herein and there is MUCH about U S Pipe & Foundry's Bessemer Plant where most of the people in Evans' family seemed to have worked. There is good material on black neighborhood and industrial black baseball teams from Bessemer. This seems to be a preliminary edition of a book that was meant to be much fancier and lengthier. For example, the table of contents does not show any page numbers which means to me that he meant to rewrite the manuscript in a more permanent form; also the table of contents calls for photos but there are none. Mr Evans is deceased and I went thru almost all of his books after his death and there was only 1 complete copy of this title. There were NO copies of anything designated as Volume 2. Now it's possible that someone could have gotten to the books before I did but I was told that he was not married and that he did not have any children. He seems to have spent most of his life in the Army and in amassing a huge but virtually worthless book collection. There does not seem to be a huge amount of African American source material on Bessemer so I'm thinking this might be one of the few truly valuable books that was in Mr. Evans' collection. Some very minor wear and stains else VERY GOOD. -------* - I don't think Volume 2 was ever written. Volume 1 ends in a seemingly appropriate way when he catches a train North from the Birmin gham Terminal Station in order to joined the U S Armed forces. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ (the fine print ...
