GUNN'S DOMESTIC MEDICINE was the most popular home medical manual of the 1800s, selling most widely in the western and southern states. By 1840, according to Gunn, one hundred thousand copies had already been sold. With the "demand.increasing" (Gunn, p.9), the book was revised and enlarged from 450 to nearly 900 pages in the edition offered here. A populist writer of the Jacksonian mold, Gunn denounced the elitism and jargon of contemporary physicians and offered his manual as an alternative to doctors' visits. In addition to its general "Guide to Health," this volume features a large section on "The Passions," a materia medica, a dispensatory, and a catalogue of medicines in table format. NO RESERVE
