You are bidding on a beautiful Green "Gurgling Cod" Pitcher from Shreve Crump & Low of Boston. The pitcher is a large size, measuring 10 inches high and is 7 inches wide. The pitcher was made in England and makes a gurgling noise when going from a slated position to an upright position. This pitcher is in mint condition with no knicks, chips, cracks, etc. It has been kept in a china cabinet behind glass and is ready for its new home. The gurgling cod pitcher is inspired by the Atlantic codfish which was once so plentiful off New England's shores. the fish was not only a staple of early Yankee cooking but the foundation of the Commonwealth's fishing industry. Codfish, in fact, proved to be so vital to the economy of Massachusetts that the Legislature immortalized it by hanging a six-foot carved cod behind the Speaker's desk in the State House.
