The Hamilton Collection Birds of Paradise Venetian Glass Sculpture Collection Limited Edition 12,500 I purchased in 1986 & 1987 All are hand crafted Venetian glass sculptures created by The Formia Studios in Murano , Italy . History: Venetian glassmaking first was developed over 1,000 years ago, as master artists created brilliant works by sculpting molten glass. Monarchs and wealthy art connoisseurs spurred the glass masters on to greater achievements in this medium - but it was not until the Renaissance of the 15 th and 16 th centuries that Venetian glass reached the height of its artistic splendor. In 1291, the glass-making furnaces of Venice were moved to the island of Murano . This move served to isolate the secrets of the glassmasters' art, which were passed from father to son during an apprenticeship of many years. Today these age-old secrets are still practiced at Murano by the descendants of the celebrated Renaissance masters of the craft.
