Power cable in perished state My beloved Hammond C3 organ is up for sale. It's an instrument with an unbelievably rich sound that the included Leslie 760 amp does great justice. Everything on the organ works perfectly and it's in very good condition for its age. I bought the organ from a local hospital chapel upon its demolition. It was looking rather neglected and was a bit of a rescue mission - It's life before that, if indeed it had one is unknown. However, it had obviously been well looked after up until its recent period of neglect though it did need some coaxing to fire up. It now works perfectly and emits the most awesome characteristic Hammond sound. I tend to get quite dewy eyed when I think about the heritage in the sound it makes but, suffice to say, if you listen to any rock music from the 60s to the present and then realise the organ you own makes the exact same noise - it's quite exhilarating. I've determined the age to be 1963 to 1964 - based on the link to the Tonewheel General Hospital website above. The serial number fits that date range and the logo is of the small type that also corresponds to that vintage. The Leslie 760 amp The Leslie 760 amplifier is in super condition too. One or two minor scuffs and nicks prevent me from describing it as perfect. It's the type with the black 'carry' case with the fold out flight handles. It's on wheels too as there's really no way you'd want to try lifting it alone. The Leslie 760 features the trademark rotating cones for the organ's tremelo feature. When switched on, there's the delightful delay in winding up that Hammond afficianados will know and love. I never tire of listening to the changing note as the Doppler effect kicks in, or watching the grille cloth of the amp flap in and out with the internal movement. The bad bit The power cable is clearly the original and has a rubber coating that has perished over the years. In several places there is cotton insulation showing through. It works, but clearly has a limited life if it's going to be moved around a lot as everytime it moves, a little more rubber cracks off it. I would replace this but it seems there are only sources in the USA . I was reluctant to alter the original spec so I have not taken the easy step of changing the plug on the organ side - everything is original. I must emphasise though, that this is the power cable, NOT the vastly more expensive organ to Leslie cable. The cable that powers the Leslie and carries all that juicy, soul laden audio signal is in great condition, if not perfect! Collection You'll need a Transit sized kind of van and a bit of muscle to move the C3. I have the transit bolts that fasten down the generator bank and these will be fitted once you are satisfied that the organ works as described. Please feel free to have a really good jam on collection - although I tinker on the piano, I have never been able to do much with the C3 and i would LOVE to hear it being played properly a la Jon Lord or Booker T!!
