I am offering a fine, hand-painted oil reproduction of Jean-Baptiste Greuze' "L'accordée de village," (1761) commonly referred to as "The Village Betrothal" in the United States. The original hangs in the Louvre. This beautiful item is striking, and has an interesting provenance. My grandfather gained ownership in the Washington, D.C. area, in the mid 1900s, when he settled a case for a client, and was given several paintings in lieu of an attorney's fee. The painting is large, and unsigned, however, according to the original owner, it was painted by a student in the school of Greuze, sometime in the mid to late 1800s. It is in reasonably good condition, given its age. It is framed in a large gilt wooden frame that needs some retouching, or it needs to be reframed. The frame is lit. Dimensions: 34.5 inches in height x 44 inches length (just the stretched canvas); with the frame it is 42.5 inches in height x 52.5 inches in length. There is one area where some sort of dried mark/streak is on the surface of the work. I do not wish to have it professionally cleaned, nor do I want to try to remove it myself, as I do not have the expertise. It looks as though it would come off with minimal effort, however. There is a detailed photo of the streaks included. I am including pictures of the back of the painting, showing the framers mark, and read more
