A "burl" is an abnormal growth that typically grow on the outside of the tree and usually near the tree trunk. Since each "eye" of the burl could have grown into a tree branch, this causes the grain to grow in every direction at the same time. A burl typically also has bark inclusions, voids, as well as other things making it difficult to turn. So during the turning process, natural flaws such as dark lines, imperfections, natural voids, knots, worm holes, insect art, etc. all adding to the uniqueness and beauty of the piece, are revealed. This item has a few features many of these unique and beautiful imperfections that only nature can provide. A burl also does not form on most trees so they are all very rare, yet contain the most desired wood and is worth all of the extra effort to turn, as you can see. I am now using the Super Glue (CA Glue) finish for all of my pens. This type of finish is extremely durable and will help keep your pen safe from water, oil and the rigors of daily use. It takes a little longer to use this finishing method, and costs a little more as well. However the finish you have on the pen when completed, is very similar to an acrylic, and will last the life of the pen with no problems. The primary difference in a Nouveau Sceptre pen is that it has the advantage of being a slightly larger size pen, but due to its unique design it is very light and comfortable to hold. The bottom, or writing end, of the pen is about ½" in diameter at the thickest, yet only about ¼" in diameter where your fingers grip the pen to write. An often overlooked element is how smoothly and quickly the cap attaches to the pen. The Nouveau Sceptre has 3 separate starting points for the cap/pen to catch on.
