During the early Vietnamese Dynasties, scholarly arts, such as painting and calligraphy or “beautiful writing”, were highly respected and as a result many unique utensils were produced. One such item produced was the water dropper, which was used to dilute the cake of ink on the inkstone to obtain the right consistency for use in painting. Water droppers have been made in white porcelain in Asia since the 14th century. This unique Vietnamese water dropper was moulded in the shape of a turtle with blue and white glaze.
