Handwritten Journal 1880s Am I Haunted Spiritualist Father's Suicide DepressionThis is an interesting 17 page handwritten journal/story by Alice Dutton entitled Am I Haunted. It is from the Dutton family papers and is from the 1880s. It is not complete as it stops in the middle of a thought but is very interesting picture of depression and spiritualism at the time. It says in part:Before I say another word I must protest against your coming to believe as you advance in this that I am insane. No matter how strong the inclination maybe to such an opinion...that the facts which I relate are contrary to logic and common sense and bear strong evidence of utter hallucination, I am willing to grant, but that my brain is in any sense unbalanced, that I am laboring under a delusion that I am unduly wrought upon by the sorrow I have suffered...I am not a spiritualist I have saw a medium in my life never attended a spiritual meeting, have never had a moments patient conversation with any holding that faith and until the startling experience of which this paper is to be a faithful record have denied the possibility of spiritual manifestations...And yet here in this very house which many of you pass daily and which is so commonplace in its outside there have been for months and are now transpiring such mysterious events as serve to overturn every
