Three Stars, Sr. was born on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.He is from the tiyospaye - extended family - clan of Crazy Horse. He is also a descendant of Red Horse, a participant at The Battle of Little Big Horn and a winter count historian.Three Stars began sketching in fourth-grade. In fifth and sixth-grades, he began attending art classes after school.In 1968, at age 12, Three Stars attended a summer art school under the supervision of renowned Sioux artist Oscar Howe.The artist excelled in art throughout his high school years, at Northern State College from 1974 to 1976 and at Black Hills State College from 1976 to 1978.Three Stars is currently the official Winter Count Historian and Keeper of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe. Additionally, he is a fourth generation pipemaker.A heart attack in 1978 slowed Three Stars' progress in the art world, but in 1982, he attended the Grenoble Exposition in France. Here, he sold numerous originals and thousands of prints; an estimated 300,000 people attended the exposition.For five years, Three Stars worked for The Lakota Times weekly newspaper.
