This is a portrait of a Soux warrior on a small silver plated tray. It acts as a silvered frame around a miniature portrait. It is called a tip tray because coins could be placed on it, though the surface of the enameled image shows that very few coins were ever placed here, if so, very gently. These were also sometimes used as ash trays, which was invariably damaging. This was not used as an ash tray. The image looks like a miniature painting, but under sufficient magnification it is revealed to be a lithographic offset on porcelain, with detail and highlights applied by hand. The image is of the warrior and chief Young Man Afraid of His Horse (1836 - 1893). The name itself is an unfortunate mistranslation. "Afraid of His Horse(s)" is a family name meaning that the family member was such a power in war that others feared not only him, but his horses. The name originated with his grandfather, and was lived up to by both his father and himself. "Young Man" just meant he was the youngest of the clan when the name was given, and it stuck. He was an important chief of the Sioux during their transition from nomadic life to settlement on reservations. He was a courageous fighter for the most dignity and respect for his people, while advocating peace and practical cooperation with the United States. Why the O'Hara Company chose Young Man read more
