Harlequin Reed & Barton Sterling Demitasse Spoon Set History & Context Reed & Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts began in 1824 as the partnership of Babbitt & Crossman. Babbitt & Crossman, both Jewelers, began a small Britannia firm that went through several incarnations and almost collapsed but was saved by the work of three people: Charles E. Barton (brother-in-law of Crossman) Henry Good Reed and Benjamin Pratt. By 1840, Reed & Barton was established.Reed & Barton produced over 100 flatware patterns, including Francis I, which has been a popular pattern since its introduction in 1907. The firm acquired Dominick & Half in 1928 and the Webster Co. in 1949, which was later sold to Towle.High quality sterling, created the best American firms (e.g. Tiffany, Gorham, Wallace, Reed & Barton) is becoming more difficult to find as collectors world-wide enthusiastically drive prices up as they compete to acquire unique sterling collections.
