I've done extensive research on these chairs, in order to find the time they were produced. I had an antique shop for a few years and stumbled upon some wonderful finds. These chairs fascinated me, because I was able to find a Phoenix Chair Company catalog, but couldn't find my exact chairs. So I Googled and searched and somehow ran into the Notre Dame website. -- You know how that is once you start on a search quest- the world is at your fingertips!-Anyway, a picture of the South Dining Hall sprang up. At first glance it looked as if t were about a thousand?? of these same chairs. But on closer inspection I realized they are similar, but not the same. Look at the top of the chair and you will see the difference. I wanted more information, so then I went to ( a neat website on Notre Dame information and memorabilia) I learned that the hall opened in 1927. Father Lawrence Broughal commissioned their chairs to be made by the Phoenix Chair Co. of Sheboygan, Wisconsin (same company). So that gave me a reference date. I love these chairs and it has been an adventure trying to find their history, so .... What I know about these chairs: 1.) The information I was given is that these chairs were from the estate of a doctor from Galveston, Texas. 2.) I know that they were made by the Phoenix Chair Co. around 1927.
